Air fryer times: Oven chips in the air fryer

Frozen oven chips are made for air fryers: they are already coated in oil, so they crisp up without any extra. Enter the time and temperature from your bag and the converter does the rest.

Tips

  • Preheat your air fryer for 2–3 minutes for best results.
  • Do not overcrowd the basket. Air needs to flow.
  • Shake or turn halfway through to ensure even crisping.
  • Lightly coat chips with oil and season before cooking.
  • Always check doneness for your specific food. Appliances vary.

Appliances vary. Always check food is piping hot and cooked through before serving.

Tips for chips

  • Spread chips no more than two deep so the air reaches every side.
  • Shake the basket every 5 minutes or so for an even colour.
  • Don't add oil to frozen oven chips. They already have enough.
  • Cook straight from frozen. Defrosted chips go soft.

Chips: air fryer FAQs

How long do frozen chips take in an air fryer?

Most bags say 220 °C for 20 minutes. In an air fryer that's 200 °C for about 15 min, shaking every 5 minutes. Thick-cut chips need 200 °C for about 19 min, and thin fries 200 °C for about 11 min.

Do I need to add oil to oven chips in an air fryer?

No. Oven chips are already coated in oil, which is what makes them crisp. Adding more can make them greasy and smoky.

Can I cook a full bag of chips at once?

Only if they fit no more than two deep. A packed basket steams the chips instead of crisping them, so cook in batches and set the basket load to Heavy if it is full.
